Monte Nido & Affiliates Bringing A Residential Eating Disorder Program to New York State
MALIBU, Calif., Sept. 18, 2014 /PRNewswire/ -- Carolyn Costin, psychotherapist, author and chief clinical officer of Monte Nido & Affiliates Treatment Centers brings the Monte Nido philosophies to New York State with the opening of a residential program on October 6, 2014.
Since opening its doors in California in 1996, Carolyn Costin, Chief Clinical Officer, has been consistently asked to bring the Monte Nido program, known internationally for its success, to the east coast. After opening a partial hospitalization program in Manhattan last year, a beautiful estate was purchased in Westchester County, for the purpose of bringing the residential level of care to New York.
On October 2, 2014, an open house will be held to celebrate this event.
"Approximately 30% of Monte Nido's client population in California has routinely consisted of individuals from Connecticut, New Jersey, Massachusetts and New York. We wanted to give our east coast clients and their families the opportunity to avail themselves of our services without having to travel across the country. Last year we started with a residential program in Boston, Monte Nido Laurel Hill, and our PHP in Manhattan, Eating Disorder Treatment of New York (EDTNY). Our ultimate goal of offering a residential program in a beautiful, natural setting was realized when we found the perfect place in the historic area of Irvington," said Costin.
The Irvington estate, only 17 miles from Manhattan, sits on 11 acres in a park-like setting and includes a historic tavern built in 1687. Currently New York does not have residential services for eating disorders and surrounding states offer very little to no residential treatment -- particularly for adults.
"Monte Nido is ready to serve individuals with eating disorders and their families in this serene healing environment with our successful protocols and strategies that have been shown, in our published outcome study, to help sufferers become fully recovered," said Costin.
Like the other residential programs operated by Monte Nido, Monte Nido New York offers a state of the art, evidence based program, situated in a tranquil home surrounded by nature where clients can focus on recovery and regain a healthy relationship with food and their bodies. The home-like environment provides clients and their families, at all stages of recovery, the necessary setting for real life challenges to take place such as shopping for food, cooking meals and eating as a family. All of this is necessary to ensure continued recovery upon discharge. At Monte Nido, clients and their families are handled with the guidance and care of expert professionals, some who serve as excellent role models having, like founder Carolyn Costin, recovered themselves.
Carolyn Costin–Founder, Author, Chief Clinical Officer of Monte Nido & Affiliates Treatment Centers. Costin, recovered from anorexia in the early seventies, has specialized in treating body image disturbance and eating disorders since 1979. A pioneer in the field, Costin, her books and treatment programs are highly recognized and respected in the field.
Costin is an award-winning activist and a sought after speaker at national and international conferences. In 1996, after several years of treating eating disorders in both private practice and hospital settings, Costin opened Monte Nido, the first of its kind residential treatment facility. The success of her program has led to the opening of five more residential programs—of which Monte Nido New York is the fifth—as well as four day-treatment programs and two transitional living houses.
Monte Nido and Affiliates' programs are known as premier treatment facilities in the U.S. and abroad. Carolyn's books, The Eating Disorder Sourcebook, Your Dieting Daughter, 100 Questions and Answers About Eating Disorders and 8 Keys to Recovery From an Eating Disorder are highly acclaimed by professionals, sufferers and the public.
