Axion Power™ R&D Chief, Dr Enders Dickinson, Delivers Paper On PbC® Uses In Micro-hybrid Cars And Hybrid Locomotives At European Lead Battery Conference
Contrasts PbC Batteries with Traditional Lead-Acid Batteries
NEW CASTLE, Pa., Oct. 1, 2012 /PRNewswire/ -- Axion Power International, Inc. (OTCQB: AXPW), the developer of advanced lead-carbon PbC® batteries and energy storage systems, announced that its Director of Research & Development, Dr Enders Dickinson, presented a paper on automotive micro-hybrids and hybrid locomotives on September 27 at the European Lead Battery Conference in Paris.
"Axion PbC® Batteries in Emerging Applications: Micro-hybrids, Hybrid Locomotives, and Battery Energy Storage Systems" reviewed the basis for PbC batteries' high/sustained dynamic charge acceptance and its importance to micro-hybrid vehicles. Axion has been working with several major automotive OEMs on projects associated with micro-hybrid automobiles and trucks. The presentation also dealt with the self-equalization of PbC modules in string applications that results in lower system and maintenance costs. Dr Dickinson emphasized that the total absence of plate sulfation in PbC batteries, which have no-lead pure-carbon anodes, is a critical differentiator in comparisons with traditional or advanced VRLA lead-acid batteries.
Dr Dickinson also said that the self-equalization of PbC batteries in strings contribute to the suitability of PbC for hybrid locomotives. Axion Power has a purchase order to supply batteries to Norfolk Southern for its first purely battery-powered locomotive. The string equalization advantage also plays a significant role in the adoption of the PbC battery for grid-connected energy storage subsystems such as the Axion Power Cube™ introduced to the marketplace in November of 2011.
The conference was hosted by the International Lead Association (www.ila-lead.org).
About The ILA
The ILA is a focused and dynamic organization dedicated to serving lead producers and other companies that have a direct interest in lead and its use. The ILA's roots stem from the Lead Development Association, founded in 1946, which is today focused on the safe production, use and recycling of lead. The European Lead Battery Conference is a premier forum for the lead-acid battery industry.
About Axion Power International, Inc.
Axion has developed and patented a next generation energy storage device that won the prestigious Frost & Sullivan Technology Award for North America in the field of lead-acid batteries. According to Frost & Sullivan, Axion's new PbC® batteries have "the potential to revitalize the lead-acid battery industry by breathing new life into an established technology that is not well suited to the requirements of important new applications like hybrid electric vehicles and renewable power."
Axion Power International, Inc. is the industry leader in the field of lead-acid-carbon energy storage technologies. Axion believes this new battery technology is the only class of advanced battery that can be assembled on existing lead-acid battery production lines throughout the world utilizing Axion's proprietary carbon electrodes. Axion's future goal, after filling their plant's lead-carbon battery production capacity, is to become the leading supplier of carbon electrode assemblies for the global lead-acid battery industry.
