Currently, the types of cancer support services available typically focus on how to cope more effectively with the emotional and physical changes resulting from cancer diagnosis and/or treatments. Cleaning for Cancer's surveys are unique in that they will help identify the types of services cancer patients want.
"One of the objectives is to determine how cancer diagnosis and subsequent treatment impacts patients' unmet non-medical needs," noted one of the studies' authors, Jon F. Strasser, M.D., attending physician at the Helen F. Graham Cancer Center, Christiana Care Health System in Wilmington, Del.
The growing list of authors for the studies include Pauline C. Hamel, Ed.D., P.T., and Mario R. Nacinovich Jr., M.Sc., faculty members at Boston University; Lauren McCoy, communications specialist at MD Anderson in Houston; Nicolas J. DeLillo Jr., Ph.D., and Jennifer Obidimalor, Pharm.D., for AXON in New York. AXON will coordinate the surveys.
"Additionally, the study results would help reinforce the need to consider quality-of-life issues when healthcare professionals interact with patients and their caregivers," added Dr. Hamel, who is also a breast cancer survivor.
"Supportive assessment surveys focus on pharmacologic therapies," said Nicolas DeLillo Jr., Ph.D., Scientific Affairs Manager for AXON. "The emphasis of this research is on the non-pharmacologic — services that can help improve quality of life, such as home cleaning."
"Cleaning for Cancer's mission is to help cancer patients heal and restore their energy by providing them with free residential cleaning," said Nadege Desravines, founder and executive director. "Implementing these surveys demonstrate our organization's commitment to truly understand the needs of all patients with all types of cancer."
